Rihanna showed up in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday in the form of a wax double installed at the Madame Tussauds museum in the district.
The picture at right? That’s wax Rihanna, hanging out in New York last week.
She wasn’t on hand for the reveal, so sorry, no cool shot of the singer posing with herself — but she did give the statue her smooch of approval ahead of time.

Police have shot and killed a gunman who was holding three hostages in the lobby of the Discovery Communications Building in Silver Spring, Md. The hostages got out of the building safely. Law enforcement officials confirm that the suspect is dead.
Montgomery County Police Chief Tom Manger said officers shot the gunman at about 4:50 p.m. because law enforcement ”believed the hostages were in danger” after hours of negotiations.
“We had been talking to him for several hours and he had a wide range of emotions,” Manger said.
Manger said he one of the devices on the gunman’s body appeared to go off when he was shot. Manger said people “saw some smoke” and “heard a pop.”
DC Mayor trails in poll as early voting begins

Washington (CNN) – Early voting begins Monday in the District of Columbia, 15 days before the crucial primaries.
The start of early voting comes one day after a new Washington Post poll indicates Mayor Adrian Fenty trails his Democratic challenger, City Council Chairman Vincent Gray, by double digits. Since Democrats dominate elections in the city, the winner of the Democratic primary will be considered the overwhelming favorite in the November general election.
According to the survey, Gray leads Fenty 49 to 36 percent among registered Democratic voters. But his lead swells to 53 to 36 percent among those likely to cast ballots in the Democratic primary.
The poll indicates that most Democrats polled give the mayor credit for his accomplishments during his term in office and say he brought needed change to the city. But voters are split on whether Fenty, who’s running for a second term, is willing to listen to different points of view and whether he understands the problems of people like them. And by a 13-point margin, a plurality say the mayor’s not honest and trustworthy.
A majority of African-Americans, who make up the majority of the district’s Democratic voters, are critical to Fenty, according to the poll. Sixty-four percent of African-American registered Democrats say they are supporting Gray, with less than one in five backing Fenty. On the other hand, Fenty has a 64 to 28 percent advantage among whites.
Glenn Beck Comes To D.C., Controversy Follows

Tens of thousands of Glenn Beck fans and Tea Party supporters are expected to descend on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., Saturday for an event the conservative talk show host has promoted as a celebration of America’s “heroes and heritage.”
But as is usually the case with the histrionic Fox News Channel host and national radio personality, his actions have not come without controversy.
A countermarch is being planned at a different location in Washington to protest Beck’s decision to schedule his event on the same site and on the 47th anniversary of civil rights hero Martin Luther King Jr.’s seminal “I Have a Dream” speech.
And the timing of Beck’s rally, which includes a planned appearance by 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, is also being criticized by some Tea Party leaders concerned it will depress attendance at their planned Sept. 12 organization-building rallies in Washington; St. Louis; and Sacramento, Calif.
“I hope they have a wonderful time, but I just don’t get why he’s having this and why now,” says Andrew Ian Dodge, Maine coordinator for the Tea Party Patriots, who has dubbed Saturday’s event “Beckapalooza.”
AMERICANS—BLACK AND WHITE—WORRY THAT GLENN BECK IS SETTING THE STAGE FOR RIOTS IN WASHINGTON DC ON AUGUST 28th
Glenn Beck has announced he wants to “take back” the Civil Rights movement by holding a rally, Saturday August 28th at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC on the 47th Anniversary of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous “I have a Dream” homily in 1963. Millions of people, black, white, Hispanic, Asian and Native American, are outraged by what they deem an arrogant travesty by Beck.
The Reverend Alfred Charles “Al” Sharpton says Glenn Beck should not be allowed to hijack the legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Reverend Sharpton says, “We will not let them have the stage alone.” Reverend Sharpton does not want a confrontation, but many others look forward to confronting Beck and what they describe as his “rightwing” or even “racist” followers.
Dr. Malik Zulu Shabazz, chairman of the New Black Panther Party, says that Beck has been attacking him and his fellow Black Panther Party members relentlessly, so they are looking forward to confronting Beck, the tea party, and all of his “rightwing” collaborators at the rally. Dr. Shabazz vows the New Black Party will be there, “ready to rumble.”
At least one New Black Panther Party leader urges his followers to “kill crackers”—even to “kill their babies.” Most people of color reject such hate-filled extremism, but they are concerned Beck’s provocations will incite and attract violent extremists, both white and black. Many cite a video, “Glenn Beck: Pied Piper of Deceit?” that has finally emerged from the underground to appear on the web on sites like YouTube.* It appears the video was produced to discourage moderates from attending the rally, suggesting Beck is a “judas goat” leading innocent people into a trap. Others wonder if Beck secretly produced the video to motivate the Klan and other racists to show up at the rally in large numbers “to protect honor.” The video shows Beck himself wondering what it will take to prevent riots from breaking out.

Former drug supplier to Barry now Fenty campaign contributor
June 28, 2010 by owner
Filed under Politics, Washington DC Metro
A restaurateur who testified 20 years ago that he supplied then-Mayor Marion Barry with cocaine, a Caribbean hotel room for his girlfriend, and money in return for political access is tied to $6,000 given to Mayor Adrian Fenty’s re-election campaign.
Hassan Mohammadi, his wife, Yasaman Rowhani, and his Delaware-based restaurant each gave the Fenty campaign $2,000 on March 9, campaign records show.
So far, Fenty has declined to say whether he will give back the money.
Mohammadi testified in 1990 that he provided Barry with cocaine more than 30 times, according to published accounts of the former mayor’s trial that followed an FBI sting operation at a D.C. hotel. Once, Mohammadi testified, he brought cocaine to Barry at the mayor’s office in the District Building.

D.C. teachers get raises, accept merit pay in pact
June 3, 2010 by owner
Filed under Education, Washington DC Metro
As their colleagues in New York City and suburban Washington face salary freezes, furloughs and layoffs, D.C. teachers on Wednesday approved a $140 million contract that grants them raises retroactive to 2007.
The proposal also includes a voluntary merit-pay component and limits the power of tenure in giving the schools chancellor more power to assign and fire teachers – the kinds of structural changes that conservative school reformers nationwide say are essential to make public schools work better.
The average base salary will jump from $67,000 this year to more than $81,000 in 2012. Depending how well their students perform, teachers in the merit-pay program could earn up to $150,000, which would make them some of the highest-compensated urban teachers in the nation.
The contract awaits approval by the D.C. Council.
The 1,412-425 vote comes nearly two months after Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee and Washington Teachers’ Union President George Parker announced a tentative deal had been reached after 2 1/2 years of negotiations.
It also follows contentious discussions in City Hall, where the District’s independent chief financial officer had to intervene once city officials learned D.C. Public Schools did not have the $38 million in its budget to finance the proposed deal.
